Henry Fielding (1707-1754)

Upton upon Severn is said to be the model for parts of Henry Fielding's 'Tom Jones'.  The White Lion Hotel is an imposing Georgian Inn in the centre of the town. One of the Inn's famous guests was Henry Fielding, the author and dramatist.  He mentions The White Lion in his 1749 masterpiece 'The History of Tom Jones' writing: "Tom took... his redeemed lady… to that Inn which in their eyes presented the fairest appearance in the street", and he called the hotel "a house of exceedingly good repute".
