King John 1166-1216
Worcester Cathedral is the final resting place of 'bad' King
John. He lies in the centre of the exquisite chancel, in front of
the high alter and between the shrines of St Wulfstan and St
Oswald.
King John is famous for signing the Magna Carta that required
the King to renounce certain rights - a significant influence that
led to the evolvement of constitional law today. King John
was the 5th son of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine and
father of Henry III of England. King John succeeded the
throne after the death of his older brother Richard I (later known
as Richard the Lionhart).
