Stanley Baldwin
(1867-1947)
The three times Prime Minister was born in Lower Park Road,
Bewdley. His record of honest dealings, common sense politics and
respect for the working man was unquestioned. He was known as the
'Plain man's' Prime Minister and had to cope with the general
Strike of 1926 and the knowledge that the new King, Edward VIII had
formed a liaison with the American divorcee, Wallace Simpson. It
was on Baldwin's shoulders to face the King with an ultimatum, the
choice between the throne and the marriage, the results of which
are known all over the world.
