Bredon Hill Standing
Stones
The standing stones on Bredon Hill are known as The King and
Queen Stones and Bambury Stone. They are surrounded by folklore and
are thought to be places of power by modern witches. Although
actually three stones, they are thought to have once been joined as
two. The practice of passing sick people between the stones in
order to heal may also once have been practised here. Legend also
has it that the Bambury Stone will go for a drink in the River Avon
when it hears the bells of Pershore Abbey strike midnight. The
Stones may also have been used as a sort of court, or legal
assembly as it was thought that the holding of these sessions at
such an ancient site bestowed upon them an authority as ancient as
the stones themselves.
