Bromsgrove
Bromsgrove is a town with a rich industrial past that is still
evident today.
In 1894 the Guild for Applied Arts was set up and the group
became renowned for their decorative ironwork, one of their most
famous pieces are the gates of Buckingham Palace.
A quirky annual event in Bromsgrove is Court Leet, which is
brought to life around Midsummer's Day. Court Leet is a forerunner
of modern Trading Standards where members test the strength of the
ale, not a bad job for some!
For those of you that like music, the Bromsgrove Music Festival
takes place in May. The Festival covers the musical spectrum, from
jazz to classical with many internationally acclaimed artists
performing. The creative streak doesn't end with arts, crafts and
music it also encompasses literature with A E Housman, author of 'A
Shropshire lad' being one of Bromsgrove's most famous sons.
Just outside Bromsgrove is Avoncroft Museum of Historic
Buildings where visitors can roam the 15 acre open air site housing
over 25 historic buildings including a 1940s prefab, a windmill and
the national collection of telephone kiosks!
A major feature of the county is the Worcester and Birmingham
canal which starts at the River Severn in Worcester and passes
through the Worcestershire countryside, climbing Tardebigge locks
and then on to Birmingham. Tardebigge locks are the longest
flight of navigable locks in the country, with 30 locks climbing
217 feet (66m)!
