Droitwich Spa
Droitwich literally means 'Place of Salt' and gets its name from
the time that the Romans occupied the area and exported the then
very valuable commodity. The Victorians took advantage of the
natural brine, its strength second only to the Dead Sea, and
developed the town into a fashionable spa.
The attractive town centre is dotted with medieval churches and
half-timbered buildings. Nearby is Webbs Garden Centre, the
Midlands largest garden centre, with something to suit all green
fingers. The Jinney Ring Craft Centre at Hanbury is an award
winning craft centre set in beautiful old timbered barns and has 12
individual craft studios; where better to pick up a piece of
locally produced handicraft? Hanbury Hall (National Trust) is
a William and Mary style house boasting a magnificent staircase
with murals by Sir James Thornhill, a beautifully restored garden
as well as an adventure playground to keep the children amused.
New to Droitwich Spa in 2010 is the 21 mile circular canal ring
that is perfect for holidays and short breaks on a boating
holiday. The route takes in some fantastic scenery and joins
the River Severn in Worcester. This historic canal network is
currently being restored back to its former glory and will be a
great place to walk, cycle and relax.
