Upton upon Severn
Upton Upon Severn is a pretty and vibrant town on the banks of
the River Severn. The first recording of the town is in 897
when King Coenwulf mentioned its foundation. It was an
important coaching stop and the many Georgian Inns are a testament
to this, notably the White Lion, which is said to be the model for
parts of Henry Fielding's 'Tom Jones'. Nowadays Upton is
famous for its annual Jazz, Blues, Water and Folk Festivals.
The Pepperpot, Upton's main landmark is a heritage centre and
tells the story of the town through the ages. Near to Upton
is Croome Landscape Park, Lancelot 'Capability' Brown's first
proper commission. The landscape is currently being
reinstated to its former glory with the aid of the National
Trust.
