The Worcester Repertory Company returns to the glorious Commandery Gardens with this year’s must-see event of the summer; a hijinks-filled rendition of the most successful farce of all time, Brandon Thomas’s utterly hilarious Charley's Aunt.

The Rep’s annual outdoor event has become something of an institution since its first season back in 2007. Director Chris Jaeger, Artistic Director of the Worcester Repertory Company, said, “We are, as always, very excited about this year’s Commandery performance. This is our 11th consecutive summer production at the Commandery and the second non-Shakespeare. We shall definitely be returning to the Bard next year with the ever-popular Twelfth Night, one of Shakespeare’s funniest plays, but following the success of The Importance of Being Earnest last year, we have been persuaded to have one more year away from the Bard.”

Charley’s Aunt is arguably the most successful farces of all time. When it opened in 1892, it broke all historic records for plays of any kind, with an original London run of 1,466 performances. “We are doing a slightly abridged version,” he added, “but it is still a sparkling, if slightly improbable, comedy.”

The production stars Rep Associate Director Ben Humphrey as Jack Chesney, and Jamie Kwasnik as Charley Wykeham, two Oxford students who cajole their rascally friend and fellow student ‘Babbs’ (played by Stratford-based actor John-Robert Partridge) to pose as Charley’s Aunt from Brazil (“where the nuts come from”) in order to act as chaperone to their amorous antics, as they try to woo the two girls that they love over dinner. Chaos and comic confusion ensue, especially when Charley’s real aunt (played by corps Rep actor Liz Grand) arrives unexpectedly…

Director Chris Jaeger added: “We have an all-star cast: all of last year’s cast will be back on stage, and we welcome Lucy-Jane Quinlan and Jamie Kwasnik in addition. With a bit of luck, we’ll have some excellent weather to boot. What’s not to like?!”

So pack a picnic, bring a bottle, and prepare to belly laugh your way through a summer evening’s entertainment like no other, all in the glorious surroundings of the Commandery gardens – book early to avoid disappointment!

Charley’s Aunt opens on Tuesday the 11th July and runs for two weeks in the Commandery Gardens, Worcester.
