TWO BRAND NEW PLAYS TO PREMIERE AT WORCESTER’S SWAN THEATRE NEXT WEEK
The Worcester Repertory Company will be presenting a double bill of new work at the Swan Theatre’s Vesta Tilley Studio next week: two new one-act plays, both two handers, starring three of the Rep’s corps actors: Jonathan Darby, Liz Grand and Victoria Lucie.
This is an evening of two halves, the first comprising Worcester Rep Associate Director Ben Humphrey’s latest play, Number 42. In December 2015 a man’s body was found on the moors in the Peak District National Park. To all intents and purposes he had lain down and, of his own free will, taken his own life. Despite numerous police appeals and international interest, no one seemed to know who he was, where he was from or why he was there. He was the forty-second unidentified body found in the UK that year… and his identity remained a mystery until just a few weeks ago, when, on 26th January 2017, the ‘Body on the Moor’ man was finally confirmed as David Lytton, a Londoner who had travelled 200 miles to the natural beauty spot where he died of apparent strychnine poisoning. What happened in the last hour of his life? Written before the recent discoveries had been made, Number 42 presents a thrilling fictional account of the last half hour of his life, and nothing is as you would expect...
The second two-hander comes from the Rep’s Artistic Director Chris Jaeger, and depicts the twists and turns of an unlikely friendship forged between two women on a park bench: one young, noisy, mobile phone addicted, shallow and selfish; the other middle-aged, cynical, grumpy and critical. One of them is harbouring a terrible secret that will bring the women with seemingly nothing in common together in a totally unexpected way, and prove that conclusions can sometimes be hard to predict.
This double bill is the latest in a long list of new work that has premiered at the Swan in recent years. Chris Jaeger, Artistic Director of the Worcester Rep, is delighted that the Swan continues to be a hub of creative work: “Over the past few years we have premiered a number of new works, some now on national tours, from writers such as Avril Rowlands, Peter Sutton and John Dowie. We are delighted to support local talent and creative production in a way that sees new work actually make it to the professional stage.”
Number 42 & Conclusions run from Tuesday 21st – Saturday 25th February, with tickets available from the Worcester Live Box Office on 01905 611427.
