Funny, heart-breaking and human, The Best Thing is the latest touring production from Vamos Theatre, the UK’s leading full mask theatre company. Set in the 1960s, the show tells the story of seventeen year old Susan, growing up during the changing times of the decade. A bitter-sweet story of mistaken morals and broken hearts, 45s and beehives, the production looks at what the sexual revolution really meant for young people living through it.

Humorous and poignant, The Best Thing features 1960s music and design, and is a chance to see the highest quality full mask theatre. Award-winning Vamos Theatre has been praised by the BBC and The Stage as one of the UK’s major exponents of full mask, an innovative and unique style of theatre: it has no speech, and the story is told visually, supported by design, music and lighting. In Vamos’s hands, it is one of the most engaging, human, and personal theatre experiences around.

The company, which is based in Worcester, tours nationally and internationally every year, and aims to showcase and popularise this fascinating theatre genre. Unusually for a theatre production, its visual style also makes it completely accessible to deaf and partially deaf audiences, without the need for signer or captions.

“This touching piece by mask theatre company Vamos takes the long view in its investigation of the unhappy plight of unmarried teenage mothers in the 1960s. The mask work is terrific... with the swinging – and not so swinging – aspects of the 1960s revealed through action, music and fashion… We may have heard this story before, but Vamos make it seem fresh and necessary all over again.” Lyn Gardner – The Guardian

The production is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, and by Worcestershire County Council. Age 12+
