PETER ATKINSON, DEAN OF WORCESTER CATHEDRAL WILL BE UNDERTAKING A SPONSORED CYCLE RIDE OF 1000 KILOMETRES IN NORMANDY IN SUPPORT OF THE FRIENDS.

The Friends of Worcester Cathedral are delighted to announce that in June 2016 The Very Reverend Peter Atkinson, Dean of Worcester Cathedral, will be undertaking a sponsored cycle ride of 1000 kilometres in Normandy in support of The Friends.
The “Dean’s Challenge” will be undertaken during his three-month sabbatical this summer. The great Benedictine abbeys such as Le Mont St Michel and Le Bec which he will visit, were founded in the same century as our great Cathedral in Worcester.
The Dean will follow the route taken in 1897 by a famous English clergyman, Percy Dearmer, who was a follower of Ruskin and Morris, and a friend of Woodbine Willie and Lord Beauchamp.
However, there is a double challenge, one for the Dean to complete his cycle ride, and one for the Friends, because for every kilometre sponsored it is hoped to recruit a New Friend. For £10 sponsorship per kilometre there will be a year’s free membership of the Friends. Whether you wish to join the Friends or just sponsor some kilometres the Friends would be thrilled to hear from you. The Friends are an important part of the Cathedral organisation and the more Friends there are, the more support can be given to the work of the Cathedral and to maintaining and enhancing its beauty.
It is hoped to raise £10,000 and this money will contribute towards the repair of the Edgar Tower, first built by King John. It was the gatehouse to his castle and was the monastic entrance of Worcester Cathedral Priory. The Tower is currently being repaired at a cost of nearly £500,000.
If you would like to join the Friends and support the Dean’s Challenge you can find forms in the Cathedral, on-line via the website www.thefowc.org.uk, in the Worcester Tourist Information Centre or telephone us on 01905 732920. We would love to hear from you.
