Top children's illustrator Nick Sharratt opens Pirates, Pants and Wellyphants at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum

9 July – 3 September 2016

Best-loved children's illustrator and author Nick Sharratt will open the doors to an imaginative family exhibition in Worcester on Saturday 9 July.

'Pirates, Pants and Wellyphants' is a free, hands-on exhibition which will be open until the 3 September at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum, offering a whole summer's worth of tremendous welly-tastic activities and games for families.

The opening event will be a packed day of family fun where visitors will have the chance to meet Nick Sharratt, celebrated illustrator of award-winning books ‘The Story of Tracy Beaker’ as well as his own books such as ‘Ketchup on your Cornflakes?’. There will be opportunities to bring a favourite book for signing, read his sensational stories and make a fabulous 3D bookmark to take home.

This hands-on exhibition encourages families to design their very own Pants to add to the art gallery washing line, race against the Hundred-Mile-An-Hour Dog or tell their own Pirate story. There are even illustrated outfits, allowing visitors young and old to become wacky illustrations from sporting some fancy pants to dressing up as a pineapple!

In addition to all of the illustration-inspired hands-on fun there is to be had, there will also be a reconstructed version of Nick Sharratt’s studio, featuring amazing original artwork from books like 'Elephant Wellyphant'. Giggle at Nick’s school sketchbooks, and discover the secrets to becoming a professional illustrator.

Angie Bishop, Art Gallery and Museum Manager said: "Pirates, Pants and Wellyphants is bursting with colour and interactive fun, with artistic activities at every turn. It's free entry so families can come back and find new things to do each time they visit over the summer holidays."

Nick knew that he wanted to be an illustrator from the young age of nine, and since studying graphic design at St Martin's School of Art in London he has written over 40 children's books, illustrated close to 250 more and has won numerous awards. This touring exhibition from ShowStoppers which will be at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum all summer celebrates his inexhaustible creativity and inspires its young visitors to get their artistic hats on.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a specially designed booklet which will be available to buy at the show or to download before visiting from the Museums Worcestershire website.

'Pirates, Pants and Wellyphants' is free and open Monday – Saturday 10.30am – 4.30pm for the whole of the summer holidays (closed Sundays and Bank Holidays).
