The final phase of a two year grants programme to English cathedrals, from First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund, for urgent repairs was announced yesterday.
Grants totalling £5,423,000 have been awarded to 24 Church of England and Catholic cathedrals for repairs including stained glass windows, stone pinnacles, and roofs as well as drainage and lighting.
As part of this latest grant which shows the governments support for Cathedrals and recognises the importance of these historic buildings as community hubs, Worcester Cathedral will receive £40,000 for damp investigation and remediation to the St George’s Chapel. The Chapel is where Worcester remembers local people who died in war. A memorial to local WWI hero Revd Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy (Woodbine Willie) is also in the St George Chapel.
