What is Forest school?
Originally a Scandinavian idea, children of all ages can benefit greatly from the hands on learning opportunities inherently present in a woodland environment. In an age when many children have few opportunities to be outdoors, it offers them a way to learn and experience a broad curriculum in a woodland setting, with regular visits throughout the year. Children and young people are taught in a "classroom without walls", where they use the natural environment as a learning tool.
Forest School is an inspirational process that involves:
child initiated learning;
integration with the National Curriculum;
delivery by a trained leader (Level 3 Forest School, Open College Network);
links to accredited learning schemes (AQA and John Muir Awards); and fun
Forest School at Bodenham Arboretum gives children freedom to enjoy the natural world in way we would have done ourselves as children, within a safe and secure environment. In the form of bespoke sessions and regular events, individuals, families, youth organisations, and educational establishments can learn, play, explore, and get close to nature in a fun and interactive way. Our aim is to give children independence to make their own choices, to take risks, to be imaginative, to discover and to learn about their world
The best classroom and the richest cupboard is roofed only by the sky.” Margaret McMillan (1919)
Forest School is for all ages – children, including the under-fives and adults.
Activities are run throughout the year, including during school holidays at Bodenham Arboretum.
Be prepared for fun in all weathers!
