Severn Birds by Dave Pugh

When I'm quietly fishing I notice lots of wild birds going about their business apparently unconcerned by the boat and when I sat and listed the species I was surprised at the numbers. Remember I'm no expert bird watcher, just a country man who takes an interest in his surroundings. The list includes every bird I have definitely identified visually or audibly. Of course the actual species vary according to season and some are very unusual sightings, the Tree Sparrows and Barn Owl only once and a Peregrine twice, for example. Other birds are present that I just don't remember seeing or hearing from the boat, I'm sure I'd have heard a Yellowhammer or a Willow Warbler for instance, and someone with a good eye and binoculars might see a Goldcrest , Siskin or Linnet in season. And I'm not very good on the less common waders or ducks, a more expert eye might put a name to those that I couldn't identify.

A gentle boat tour along the river at bird-spotter speed is a very pleasant way to spend a few hours, you see the river and its banks in a whole new light and can appreciate how the river has shaped the valley and continues to do so. Different times of the year offer different opportunities, watching a Cuckoo as she stalks Reed Warbler nests in the nettles on a warm early-June afternoon is very different to a chilly binocular-range search for Goosanders or Pochards in mid-December, these are just two aspects of the Severn Expeditions bird watching experience.

A 6 hour guided trip costs just £200. There is space for 4 adults.

If you'd like to know more about a guided bird trip please email Severn Expeditions and Dave will get in touch with you to discuss your requirements.
