Clifton-upon-Teme Phantom Coach & Horses

The first recording of there being a settlement on this site was in AD943 as a Saxon settlement known as Cliftun-Ultra-Temedam, but there is evidence of earlier occupation. Not surprising therefore that the village has its fair share of ghost stories. There have been reports of phantom horses, a civil war nurse, a white lady bending over a baby’s cot and also soldiers coming out from nearby woods. One Summer morning some residents of the village heard a horse and cart coming through the village and a woman shouting ‘people, people’, but when they looked outside there was nothing to be seen.  The landlord of the local pub, the Lion Inn, has also reported strange goings on, including the frequent sightings of a man walking past the bar and then out through the wall.
