Redditch grew up from a small hamlet known as ‘La Rededich’ that had developed around the Abbey at Bordesley, built by Cistercian Monks in the 12th century. The first documented reference to the settlement dates back to 1348. Bordesley Abbey Visitor Centre displays fascinating artefacts from the sites first archaeological dig in 1864 and from more recent digs.
In the 19th Century Redditch became famous for leading the field in needle making. Forge Mill Needle Museum was built in 1730 and is the world’s only remaining needle scouring mill. Visit the Mill today and take a step back in time. The Mill museum is home to a listed building that houses original water powered machinery along with models depicting scenes of the past.
In 1964 Redditch was designated a New Town which led to redevelopment, including the landscaping of Arrow Valley Country Park. Arrow Valley Country Park is where visitors can participate in a number of outdoor recreational activities in 900 acres of green space including fishing, cycling, water-sports, lakeside walks and there is a children’s play-area.
The Kingfisher Centre is undergoing a huge expansion and modernisation programme. Currently there are 150 shops with Spanish Date Trees at its centre and there are large mosaic panels designed by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi.
The Palace Theatre is an Edwardian Theatre with a vast programme of entertainment offered throughout the year for local people and visitors to the area.
