The Commandery is home to over 1000 years of history in the heart of Worcester, just a few minutes’ walk from the Cathedral and banks of the River Severn.
You can guarantee a safe, welcoming day out as you step through The Commandery’s majestic gates, so let’s have a look at what there is to discover during your visit.
This historic Grade I listed building is most famous for being the Royalist Headquarters during the deciding battle of the English Civil War, the Battle of Worcester in 1651, and an interactive exhibition takes you back in time to 17th century Worcester. However, The Commandery has centuries more stories to uncover. Stepping into the magnificent medieval Painted Chamber will take you back to its medieval origins and a new permanent display explores the age of the Georgians. There are also regular events, including everything from living history days to murder mystery evenings.
For more information on visiting The Commandery and upcoming COVID-safe events visit The Commandery website.
Watch the borders change with the seasons in the walled garden, discover the tranquil medieval herb garden and relax in the seating area next to the canal. There’s also a brand-new natural play area where little legs can let off steam, create a den and get messy in the mud kitchen. With Fort Royal Park just across the road, you could combine your trip with the Fort Royal Memory Trail and watch the videos by scanning QR codes hidden around the park.
Commandery Coffee is a local, independent artisan coffee shop. Situated within the historic Commandery, along with seats in the beautiful canal-side garden, enjoy locally ground coffee, loose leaf teas and a huge range of delicious homemade food including gluten free and vegan options.
You can visit by entering through The Commandery or pop by just for a drink via the canal-side entrance. The café is open Tuesday to Saturday (10am-5pm) and Sunday (11am-3pm).
