Worcester Repertory Company presents Maid Marian and the Merry Men
Join the Worcester Repertory Company for the Swan Theatre’s latest spectacular, action-packed pantomime, Maid Marian and the Merry Men.
Starring Geneviève Lowe as Maid Marian, Tom Riddell as a daydreaming Robin Hood, ‘Best Baddie’ winning Liz Grand as the evil Sheriff of Nottingham, and John-Robert Partridge as the Swan Theatre panto’s infamous Dame Ginny, this year’s pantomime promises to be just as magical as ever, with cracking comedy, spectacular song and dance numbers, and all of the traditional panto treats!
However, this brand new family pantomime will also be a little different to the norm… There’s no damsel in distress waiting for a knight in shining armour this year. In fact, it turns out Robin Hood is a lover, not a fighter, so it’s all about the strong, determined and valiant Maid Marian, who is out to lead the Merry Men to overthrow the evil Sheriff of Nottingham, and prove that ‘this girl can’!
Worcester Rep Artistic Director Chris Jaeger said: “It’s really exciting to be turning some of the usual stereotypes on their heads this year. When people ask me why we’re going for Maid Marian as opposed to Robin Hood, and why we’ve chosen a female Sheriff of Nottingham, my first response is ‘Why not?’
“We have an actress within the Company who has just won a national award for ‘Best Panto Baddie’, so it seemed only right to cast her in the big baddie role. And with 2018 dubbed ‘The Year of the Woman’, it seemed entirely appropriate for her archenemy to be a heroine rather than a hero. I think that we have a responsibility within the arts to ensure that our younger generations are exposed to strong female characters in equal proportion to strong male characters.
“We’re still promising a wonderfully traditional family pantomime. It’s a magical show for a magical time of year, celebrating all that makes panto such a great British tradition.”
Director Ben Humphrey added: “For many children, a trip to the pantomime will be their first introduction to live theatre, which in this era of screens and social media makes panto more special and important than ever.
“It’s my job to ensure that this year’s panto will leave everyone feeling merry, not just Maid Marian’s men! We really can’t wait for December.”
With dazzling costumes, stunning sets and audience participation aplenty, this all-singing, all-dancing spectacular promises to be the Swan Theatre’s funniest and feistiest panto yet!
Maid Marian and the Merry Men runs from 3rd December through to the 6th January 2019 at the Swan Theatre, Worcester. For further details contact 01905 611427 or visit wwwworcesterlive.co.uk
